Spotlight Series-August Edition

Our August spotlight series features Dr. Samantha DuFlo, PT, DPT, PRPC, Owner and Founder of Indigo Physiotherapy, a practice of pelvic physical therapists and bodyworkers.

1. How did you get started with your business/career? During my doctoral program I was chosen to be part of a unique cohort to do research and community needs assessments in Malawi, part of which included HIV/AIDS research in mother to baby. I fell in love with working with women and mothers and never looked back. I find it profoundly intrinsically gratifying to do what I do. 2. What are you passionate about when it comes to working with your clients? I have been able to curate a place for clients to feel vulnerable, talk about things such as incontinence and sex and pain in a place without judgement, and am passionate about bridging the gap between birth and postpartum care. I feel so strongly about reducing stigma around just basic anatomical and physiological concepts, like self pleasure, pain free sex, body neutrality and affirming care. 3. What are you specialties? I treat from a whole-body viewpoint, with a focus in all things pelvic related- incontinence, endometriosis, pelvic pain, painful sex, hip pain, diastasis recti, birth injuries, pain while pregnant, and overall helping people prepare and recover from birth. My specialty in this niche is helping female athletes—from novice runners to Olympic-qualifiers—optimize body movement for peak performance and injury prevention during pregnancy and postpartum, which remains a huge gap in both knowledge and care in our world. 4. How does your work provide relief/insight or other benefits to your clientele? Helping clients to feel validated and heard, that their pain or symptoms are common but not normal, benefits my clients immensely. The power of understanding one's own body and having the tools to heal, and not just fall into the pattern of what women have been taught to believe (ie leaking is normal, pain is normal), can be life changing. 5. Anything else you would like to share (programs, classes, special info in times of Covid, etc) We love the pelvis and love to continue sharing that with people, whether they can make it to one of our clinical locations in Baltimore, Mt. Airy, or Ellicott City, or do virtual telehealth from the comfort of their own home. We have a slew of virtual offerings happening: check us out on social media @indigophysio for all of our latest updates, tips for health during quarantine, and more. Your pelvic health never closes!
